Costanza Knight's "Juicy Art Classes" are run as an open studio, with an emphasis on releasing each student’s individual talents. These after school art lessons are open to kids, starting at aged six, and teens.

An underlying foundation of drawing is conveyed to all children and teens as they draw a still life using charcoal. They are then introduced to other two dimensional media available which include pastels, tempera, watercolor, acrylics, and clayboard.

Printmaking is explored using soft cut blocks and linoleum or creating monotypes on plexiglass. Hand built clay forms are made out of sculpey clay  Small sculptural pieces can be made with an armature.  Other tactile media such as wood, metal, styrofoam, and fabric are available for 3-D projects and collage.

In addition to long projects, students learn about such concepts as Picasso’s blue period or the movement in Degas’ paintings. By “painting like El Greco ” they learn about art history directly. More advanced students work on longer projects and are assisted in developing portfolios.

Each student is treated as an individual.  There are no grades given nor are comparisons made with other students' work.  Whatever the child or young adult creates is precious because it is an expression of their inner being.  Costanza's background as a Speech/Language Pathologist enhances her ability to see each child's gifts and navigate the subtleties of special needs a student might have.  In addition to all this, we have fun fun fun creating!

All students' work is entered in the annual Students shows sponsored by the Arts Council of Henderson County and in the Western North Carolina State Fair, which gives them a chance to see their work hanging in a public space.   Advanced Middle and High School students' work is entered in the WNC Scholastic Art Awards exhibition held at the Asheville Art Museum.   Knight’s classes are held at The Starving Artist Art Supply Store at 814 Kanuga Road in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
